The Arc of Meriden-Wallingford, Inc was organized and founded in 1952 by parents of children with disabilities. The Society was named The Meriden Association for Retarded Children and began providing support groups for parents, advocacy and day care services to children with disabilities. It was at this time that the Agency joined the Arc movement.

In 1965, it became the Meriden Wallingford Society for Retarded Children (New Horizons) and expanded to add a school and an adult program. The Agency president, Ernie Kuhn worked with the members to develop KUHN. This new agency was developed for adults that choose to work.

In 1976, the Agency changed its name to Meriden Wallingford Society for the Handicapped, Inc. to remove the word “retarded” from its title. The Agency expanded it’s adult services to include a print shop, wood shop, cleaning service and lawn crew.

In the 1980’s the Agency and 4 other Arc’s worked together to form Residential Management Services (RMS). The Agency and RMS worked to develop over 20 residential options for people with disabilities.

In the 1990’s 3 businesses were started to provide alternate revenues for services and additional jobs for the individuals served.

Today, the Agency offers a choice of community-based services to hundreds of people with disabilities. It accepts referrals from the Department of Mental Retardation, Bureau of Rehabilitation Services, local Boards of Education, as well as self-pay referrals.

We have again changed our name. To show consistency with the Arc’s throughout the nation we have become the Arc of Meriden-Wallingford, Inc.

The Agency has provided quality services to individuals with disabilities for over 50 years and will continue to be guided by the individual’s needs, desires and dreams.
